Ten more Chorus roadside cabinets are to be included in a second cabinet art painting project in Hastings.
The Chorus mural painting programme began in Auckland in 2010 and has since been extended to many towns and cities around New Zealand.
In July 2014, murals were painted on ten cabinets around Hastings by thirteen tertiary students, who were undertaking the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa visual arts degree at Toimairangi based in Hastings. Local artists are again being encouraged to submit their designs for the next group of ten cabinets.
Hastings Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers says “The cabinets included in last year’s mural painting project have become works of art. They tell stories about the communities in which they are located, and help to discourage tagging.”
Cynthia Bowers says “The project has two major purposes; firstly it helps brighten up the area where the cabinet is located and secondly it has proved to be a major deterrent to graffiti attacks. Many of the cabinets that have been chosen as a canvas for a mural have been the subject of repeated graffiti attacks.”
Chorus Community Relations Advisor Jo Seddon says “We were delighted with the quality of designs that were submitted for the first ten cabinets and are looking forward to further stunning designs this time. Images should be reflective of the area where the cabinet is located and artists are encouraged to think “outside the square” when creating their designs.”
The locations of the cabinets to be painted this year are:
Near 808 Kiwi Street, Camberley
Mayfair Avenue near the intersection with Karamu Road, Mayfair
Near 103 Brookvale Road, Havelock North
Near 9 Diaz Drive, Flaxmere
Near 108 Park Road South, Akina
Near 1003 Southland Road, Raureka
Cnr Gordon Road and Pepper Street, Raureka
Near 311 Flaxmere Ave, Flaxmere
Cnr Plymouth and Wilson Roads, Flaxmere
Opposite 1111 Haig Street, Parkvale
The closing date for designs is Wednesday 18th March. The designs will be selected for each of the cabinets and then sent to Chorus for approval. It is expected that painting will begin in May 2015.
Designs can be emailed to wendymb@hdc.govt.nz or delivered to the Hastings District Council Service Centre, 207 Lyndon Road East Hastings.
