Mayors' Taskforce celebration

Eighty graduates from across Hawke’s Bay were piped into a ceremony recognising the qualifications they have gained through training on the job.

The Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs Graduation Ceremony was held at Lindisfarne College earlier this month.  It celebrates the success of people who have completed training while working; through courses, apprenticeships, cadetships.

“It is important that we recognise all forms of upskilling. Our EIT graduates have their ceremonies and universities have capping days; the national Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs annual ceremonies recognise those people who make a big effort to improve their knowledge and skill levels while also fully committing to their work places. That is not easy and we congratulate them on their achievements,” said Hastings deputy mayor Cynthia Bowers.

This was the fourth year in a row that the ceremony had been held. The graduates were piped into the hall before an audience of whanau, friends, employers and industry training organisation representatives, before being presented with a certificate by Mrs Bowers and Napier deputy mayor Faye White.

In Hawke’s Bay the ceremony is organised by a committee involving Industry Training Organisations’ representatives and mayors’ representatives, and convened by Youth Futures, a youth employment initiative funded by Hastings District Council.

The Mayors Taskforce was instigated in 2000. It has grown from a group of just seven of New Zealand’s mayors to now include all of the nation’s 67 mayors. The aim is to ensure all under 25 year olds are engaged in appropriate education, training, work or other positive activity in their communities.
