Roads still closed this morning

A burst dam has taken out a section of road in Te Haroto overnight.

Council has been advised that McVicar Rd is impassable. The problem at this stage is described as "a culvert blow out to the road caused by a dam bursting up stream".

The Napier-Taupo Rd, which is the access to Te Haroto, is still closed. Once it opens temporary access across McVicar Rd will be worked on, likely to be later today.

Roads that remain closed this morning (August 7) are Taihape Road, Napier-Taupo Rd and SH2 to north of Napier. Contractors started work on clearing snow to open roads at 7am this morning.

There are minor slips on roads in the coastal areas of the district, and the Puketitiri-Pakututu and Waitara areas, so drivers are being asked to take extra care.
