The Great Peak Pick Up

Fit helpers are being asked to take their muscles, enthusiasm, warm clothes, sturdy shoes and drinking water to Te Mata Peak on Sunday, for the Great Peak Pick Up.

The last major clean up was done five years ago, in 2010.

Hastings District Council environment enhancement officer Wendy Beeke says this time the rubbish is “pretty much limited to tyres and road cones”.

“It is a lot better than last time – when there was whiteware, wheelie bins and all sorts of stuff. People have got a lot better, thank goodness. Throwing stuff off the peak wrecks the farmer’s fences and endangers animals. One cow had its jaw broken this year – presumably by a tyre being thrown off the peak.”

“Peak picker uppers” are being asked to meet on the Waimarama Rd side of the peak at 9.30am. They will be put into teams of 10 with a team leader (for safety’s sake), provided with gloves and rubbish bags, and then head off to clean up.

“If you’re fit and keen for a challenge, this is really worth doing and it will be fun,” said Ms Beeke. “Instead of your normal fitness regime on Sunday, help us pick up at the peak.”

Details: The Great Peak Pick Up, 9.30am, Sunday, September 20, Te Mata Peak, Waimarama Rd, Havelock North, bring warm clothes, sturdy shoes, drinking water.
