New Clive clip-on state-of-the-art

The new Clive cycle and walkway with its ultra-modern eco-friendly plastic footpath and state-of-the-art lighting is finished and a ceremony to officially open it will be held on Friday [October 9].

The $650,000 project replaced the old narrow uneven concrete path with a wider, smoother, fenced off cycle and walkway with new pedestrian guard rail which has the added touch of LED lighting within the handrails. The bridge also features recycled plastic, which makes up the new footpath deck. “The equivalent of 4.2 million recycled shopping bags was used in the construction of the deck,” said Hastings District Council project manager Tony Mills.

NZTA regional highways manager Chuck Dowdell welcomed the new cycleway. "This project will make it safer and more appealing for people to jump on a bike, and that's a win-win for all road users."

Mr Mills described the finished project as a testament to the innovative thinking of the project team, led by Hastings District Council staff, backed by NZTA and their consultants.

“The smooth running of the construction phase of the project was important to keep Hawkes Bay moving and is a tribute to Downer NZ’s management of the site.”

The Clive Bridge is an important and well-used link on the Napier and Hastings cycle route and residents had long lobbied for a new ‘clip-on’.

Friday's ceremony, starting at 10am at the bridge, will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony and an official walk of the bridge, followed by a gathering in Farndon Park.
