The concept of ‘paharakeke’ or ‘gardens of flax’ has been proposed discussed and considered for at least 20 years amongst the community as a means to associating community identity to historic cultural and natural connections with the land.

It has been highlighted through consultation that the use of flax and art in the landscape is one way the local community wish to express pride in where they live and who they are.

The strong flax fibre known as ‘muka’ reflects the strength of the people and the binding nature of relationships. Flaxmere ‘s residents are varied and diverse and we invite you all to bring your visions and strands to weave together a future .
