Wastewater is the term used to describe a combination of domestic sewage (from showers, baths, toilets and kitchens) and trade wastes (liquid wastes produced by many industrial and commercial processes).
The Hastings District Council aims to manage the disposal of wastewater from residential, commercial and industrial properties efficiently and in a way that meets the needs of the community, while protecting our environment, and not creating nuisance or health issues.
There are 335kms of sewer mains and 31 sewerage pump stations in the Hastings District, which pump to areas able to gravitate into the inland sewers which discharge out to the East Clive Treatment Plant. At the Plant solid waste is milliscreened and pumped out to sea through a 2.8km outfall line (the longest in New Zealand.)
Every serviceable property is entitled to a connection to the wastewater network at their boundary. The wastewater network is available to virtually all Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North residential properties and most of Whakatu and Clive residential properties.
Connecting to the Network
The Council provides stormwater, sewer and water connections. Connections are the piece of pipe that join your property to the various networks. Applications for a connection are handled by the Resource Management group at Council.
Consumers have a choice of contractors to install their connections. To get an exact cost, you will need to know the length from your boundary to the service you want to connect to.
Please note there are two costs which apply when a connection
is made - the physical works cost and a development levy.

What if I Live Outside the Service Area?
A variety of wastewater disposal technologies are available in New Zealand.
If you live in a house or work in an office outside the Council wastewater system service area you will need to install an alternative treatment system to deal with your sewage waste.
