A refuse transfer station (RTS) is a place where the public, including businesses and industries, can dispose of their waste. They are a station where refuse is stored prior to its transfer from the city to the rural landfill.
The Hastings district has two RTSs; Blackbridge on the way to Haumoana, and Henderson Road in Flaxmere.
Both transfer stations allow you to recycle your old engine oil, car batteries, an assortment of household goods, and drop your green waste separately so that it is composted and not sent to landfill.
The two transfer stations combined handle around 30,000 tonnes of refuse each year.
Both transfer stations have free recycling depots and separate areas for green waste. There is a discount for 100% green waste loads.

Hastings District Council's refuse transfer stations are totally user-pays. This means only the people who use the transfer stations will be paying for their operation, not ratepayers in general.
Green waste charges are much lower than mixed waste, so there’s an extra incentive to separate your green waste and recycle as much as possible.
