Rubbish and Recycling Collection

The Council runs a weekly kerbside rubbish bag collection in the urban residential and central business areas of the Hastings district.

The rubbish collection is funded through a 100% cost recovery refuse scheme, which takes the charge of providing the refuse collection services out of rates demands. This means everyone pays their share of the costs when they purchase an official rubbish bag.

Rubbish and recycling collection days

Your rubbish and recycling collection day depends on which street, or even which part of the street, you live. Please consult the list below to find out exactly what day your rubbish is collected.

Remember:

  • Only OFFICIAL orange rubbish bags will be collected from your kerbside
  • There is NO LIMIT to the number of official bags you put out for collection each week BUT the maximum weight is 10kg per bag.
  • Household waste only - no green waste or hot ash
  • Bags out by 7.30am on the correct day/on kerb in line with your letterbox
  • It is illegal to place your rubbish outside another property
  • If you miss the recycling collection, take your recycling to the Henderson Road Recycling Depot free of charge. Alternatively you can wait until the following week's collection.

You can buy rubbish bags at Council's administration buildings at 207 Lyndon Road East in Hastings, and all supermarkets in the district.

Any bags are acceptable if you are taking rubbish to a Refuse Transfer Station yourself. Official bags can be disposed-of for free.

What to keep out of rubbish bags

Some types of waste should not be put in our domestic rubbish bags including hot ash, hazardous materials and sharp objects. Garden waste should be composted.

The Council's Waste Minimisation team encourage all householders to use the kerbside recycling collection, which is on the same day as your rubbish collection. By separating out your paper, cardboard, tin, aluminium, plastic bottles, number 1 and 2 grade plastics, and glass bottles and jars, you reduce your waste to the landfill and help preserve natural resources.

For hazardous waste disposal go to the HazMobile Collection page where you can find out how to dispose of your old paint tins, oil cans, car batteries and much more!

Recycling tips

  • Please separate recyclable materials into plastic, paper, cardboard, jars, glass bottles, tin, and aluminum cans.
  • Squash the containers as flat as possible so you can fit as much material into your recycling container/bag as possible
  • Recycling must be secured in plastic bags e.g. surplus supermarket shopping bags, cardboard boxes or your own recycling crate (HDC does not supply residents with recycling crates).
  • Place your recyclable materials out on the kerbside in line with your letterbox by 7.30am on your collection day.

What can be recycled?

    • Grade 1: Fizzy, fruit and water bottles; marmite, jam, peanut butter plastic jars, etc.

  • Plastic shopping and bread bags.
  • Clean glass jars and bottles, including green, brown and blue glass.
  • Clean tin and aluminium cans (there is no need to remove the labels).
