Joint Solid Waste Management Plan

Home : Environment : Rubbish & Recycling : Joint Solid Waste Management Plan

Truck at the landfillIn April 2000, Hastings District Council and Napier City Council adopted a joint ‘Solid Waste Management Plan’. This plan provided actions and targets for waste reduction, reuse, recycling, recovery, treatment and disposal over a five year period.

Since the plan was adopted the Hawke's Bay Region has experienced strong economic growth and good levels of population growth. Both factors have continually challenged targets for waste minimisation. The current plan is being revised to ensure that it is both relevant and that it meets the community needs.

Waste is a community issue, as everyone generates waste on a daily basis. In 2005 140,000 tonnes of waste went to Omarunui landfill; equating to 1100 kilograms of waste produced per person, per year – the same weight as a Mini Cooper car!

The good news is that in 2005 Napier and Hastings recycled 5400 tonnes of material through the kerbside recycling collection, 1600 tonnes from recycling drop off points and 8000 tonnes of green waste was turned into compost,

The Joint SWMP is designed to be really user friendly and easy to read. It contains a number of topical questions to make you think about all aspects of waste and how it affects you.
