The Animal Control team promotes better care and control of dogs, providing public education within schools and community groups, responding to dog control complaints, maintaining pound facilities and enforcing the Animal Control bylaws.

Bylaws Part 03: Animals

The objective of this Bylaw is to control the keeping of animals within the district so they do not create a nuisance or endanger health. Special reference is made to the keeping of pigs, poultry, bees, stock, and cats. The control of dogs is covered through a separate Dog Control Bylaw.

Dog Registrations

The Dog Control Act 1996 requires that all dogs be registered if three months of age or older. All dogs must be registered by 1 August each year.

Dog Control Policy 2009

The purpose of this policy is to provide a practical framework for the care and control of dogs throughout Hastings District in order to minimise any danger, distress and nuisance to the community.

The Policy aims to integrate control measures passed through the Dog Control Act 1996 (including all amendments), and Council’s Dog Control Bylaw in addition to targeted education to modify and improve the behaviour of both dogs and their owners.

Bylaws Part 09: Dog Control

The Bylaw includes requirements for the control of dogs in public places, including dogs being on-lead; provides for prohibited and off-lead exercise areas; stipulates requirements to remove dog faeces; and places limitations on the number of dogs that can be kept.
