Hastings District Council is involved in civil defence and emergency management in the Hastings District. Four staff work full time, responsible for rural fire, hazardous substances and civil defence operations.
The Hastings District Council enforces restrictions on lighting fires in the District. These restrictions range from an open fire season (no restrictions) to fire-by-permit (restricted fire season) to a total fire ban , where no permits are issued and no fires may be lit.
Hastings Rural Fire Authority currently has 300 volunteers and 14 rural fire units supported by four paid staff providing emergency response and community safety programmes throughout the rural Hastings district.
