HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES

A hazardous substance is any substance that may be explosive, flammable, able to oxidise, corrosive, toxic or eco-toxic. Most of us use hazardous substances every day at home and at work. Unwanted hazardous substances should not be disposed of with general rubbish - the annual Hazmobile collection is a safe and easy way to dispose of such waste.

HAZMOBILE COLLECTION DAY

The Hazmobile is back. Make sure you
take this opportunity to get rid of your hazardous
waste for free.

HOW TO MAKE A WORM FARM

Built entirely from reused and recycled materials.

You will require:

  • Old carpet or sack if available (optional)
  • Phone books or old bricks
  • 1 piece of corrugated iron - 600mm x 600mm
  • Small piece of plastic silage wrap or similar (eg polythene)
  • 3 car tyres of similar size
  • Something suitable as a lide
  • 35 newspapers
  • 1 container such as an old pot or bucket

REFUSE TRANSFER STATIONS

A refuse transfer station (RTS) is a place where the public, including businesses and industries, can dispose of their waste. They are a station where refuse is stored prior to its transfer from the city to the rural landfill.

The Hastings district has two RTSs; Blackbridge on the way to Haumoana, and Henderson Road in Flaxmere.

RUBBISH BAGS

Official Council rubbish bags make our rubbish collection a
user-pays system rather than adding the cost to rates, so you can save
money by recycling more and using fewer bags.
