Home : Strategic Development : Landmarks

Landmarks is Council's philosophy of creating civic pride and community identity through quality in Architecture, Landscape, Art in Public Places and History. With Landmarks, Hastings is a more attractive place to live in, raise children in, do business in, and it is a magnet to attract business and tourism.

Hastings Landmarks is loosely based on the Historic Landmarks Commission in Santa Barbara, in the United States. Former Hastings Mayor Jeremy Dwyer was inspired by the initiative during a 1996 study trip to America.

Upon his return, Mr Dwyer brought Council and community together in support of the concept, and a development plan was commissioned to provide a framework.

Hastings Street redevelopment

The resulting Landmarks Development Plan won the NZ Planning Institute Planning Practice Award for excellence. It identifies the strengths and weaknesses of the whole district and suggests a pathway to build on the strengths and address the weaknesses to enhance the district as a whole.

We are already seeing these results in the CBD with a new 'buzz', and commercial vacancy rates lower than they have been in years.
