"Slim Your Wasteline" walks are held several times a year, and offer the public a chance to take a guided walking tour of the Omarunui Landfill. The walks are a partnership between Hastings District Council and Sport Hawke’s Bay.
These free walks are advertised in the Council's weekly Community Link newspaper section in Saturday's Hawke's Bay Today. They are suitable for children aged eight and over.
All tours begin at 9.30a.m. and last for approximately two hours. It is important that attendees register with Sport Hawke’s Bay and report to Omarunui Landfill on the day of the tour, ten minutes prior to start time. Attendees must not drive over the weighbridge and are only allowed past the kiosk when accompanied by a staff member.
To register for any of the walks, call Sports Hawke's Bay on (06) 845 9333
We frequently take school tours through the Landfill, and the feedback is always excellent. You provide the transport, teachers and pupils, and we'll supply high-visibility safety vests and an interesting morning or afternoon.
If you are a teacher and would like to bring your class for a tour, you should review the checklist and risk management sheets below and then contact the Waste Minimisation Team on freephone 0508 NO WASTE or 06 878 0546 or email wipeoutwaste@hdc.govt.nz.
