During Cyclone Gabrielle, the approaches of Crownthorpe Bridge were washed out and the carriageway suffered significant damage. Since then, the bridge approaches have been rebuilt using engineered retaining walls with rip-rap protection installed around the structures.

Prior to the Christmas/New Year holiday break, work was carried out to protect the bridges on Taihape Road (in particular, Blacks, Pukehamoamoa & Swamp Cutting). Works included drainage clearance, temporary sheet piles, earth bunds, sealing, and general earthworks. In places the roads remains reduced to a single lane to minimise further degradation due to vehicle loading.
