Get ready for Dirty Deco, a dance party like no other. A night of revelry in a secret Hastings location, this is Deco, but not as you know it. Don’t miss this decadent night of music, entertainment and dancing in a truly spectacular party space. Sequins, feathers, leather or lace - anything goes. As long as the dress code is “fabulous”, you’ll fit right in.
Expect the unexpected.

Hastings City Art Deco Market (FREE)

Stallholders will be packed to the gills with fabulous selections of brand-new, vintage, and second-hand Art Deco clothing, accessories and lots more. Come on down for a full deco makeover, or grab something to complement the outfit you’re wearing.
Don’t forget the 'Fashion Flaunt' prizes up for grabs to the Best Dressed in town. Categories include Best Man, Best Lady, Best Child and Best Group.
Vintage Railcar Shuttle to Hastings

Departs Napier Train Station, Munroe Street, Napier, 2.30pm, 4pm, 5pm & 6pm
This beautiful railcar entered New Zealand service in 1938 and is lovingly restored to take you on a trip down memory lane. Departing Napier, the railcar shuttle will chug you over to Hastings (drop-off Hastings Railway Station) to enjoy the Art Deco events and activities on the other side of town. Highlights include the Art Deco Market, Charleston Challenge and Gatsby Evening Picnic and Street Party.

Take your first foray into partaking in a Gatsby picnic, or if you’re a seasoned Gatsby goer, come along as a trial run for the main event in Napier on Sunday. Grab your hamper, plates and china, throw down your rug and set-up shop to enjoy the evening. Best picnic place wins a $250 dining voucher for one of Hastings’ many restaurants and bars!

The Charleston Challenge World Record Grab with Nerida Cortese (FREE)

Dancing is all part of the Deco fun, and this year we are going BIG by making a play for the WORLD RECORD for the most people dancing the Charleston at once.
NZ dance celebrity Nerida Cortese will lead the masses with some group lessons to start before we dive-in to the main event. Nerida is a world-class dance teacher so don’t panic if you have never danced the Charleston before she will guide you through and make sure its loads of fun along the way! All ages and dance stages welcome.

The Fashion Flaunt (FREE)

Step out in your art deco kit for a chance to win one of the flippin-fabulous Fashion Flaunt prizes up for grabs. Whether you are an art deco traditionalist, or prefer to free-style your fashion, we want to see you flaunt it! There’s no catwalk or cameras so you can relax and have fun whilst our judges do the footwork and find the best dressed in the crowd. Categories include Best Man, Best Lady, Best Child and Best Group. Winners announced approx. 6.30pm after the Charleston Challenge.

For the first time in the history of the Art Deco Festival, the famous Warbirds will flyover Hastings in an impressive spectacle of aerial skill and thrilling manoeuvres.
RNZN Big Band Concert

Under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Michael Dowrick, the concert will feature a variety of musical genres with an emphasis on 1920’s-30’s styles.

Art Deco Walking Tours
15, 17 & 18 February
Hastings Community Arts Centre, Russell Street South
Join Hawke’s Bay Historian Michael Fowler for a walking tour around the Hastings CBD to see striking examples of the city’s Art Deco including some amazing Spanish Mission architecture. Discover the story of how the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake affected the CBD and learn why there are more Art Deco buildings here than in Napier. Michael’s tour is the result of over 15 year’s research and has new material added every year. The tour takes around one hour 15 minutes at an easy walking pace around the Hastings CBD.
Please meet inside the Hastings Community Arts Centre, ten minutes before departure time.

Art Deco & Rush Munro Ice Cream Tour

Join Hawke’s Bay Historian Michael Fowler for a walking tour around the Hastings CBD to see striking examples of the city’s Art Deco including some amazing Spanish Mission architecture. Discover the story of how the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake affected the CBD and learn why there are more Art Deco buildings here than in Napier. Michael’s tour is the result of over 15 year’s research and has new material added every year. Included in tour price is an ice cream at Rush Munro's, where Michael will give a brief history of the nearly 100 year old business. The tour takes around 90 minutes at an easy walking pace around the Hastings CBD.
