Hastings History and Heritage

Hastings Heritage, is a celebration of our district's rich traditions, historical landmarks, and enduring connections to the past. Our heritage is woven from the symbols, ceremonies, and monuments that have shaped Hastings' identity over the years, reflecting the deep respect we hold for our history and the contributions of those who came before us.

Heritage features

Protecting and managing Hastings’ significant heritage items leaves a lasting legacy for future generations. The District Plan identifies and protects some heritage, however additional items could be added to provide broader recognition of the district’s heritage and ensure our heritage is preserved for future generations.

Heritage trails

Hawke’s Bay is considered New Zealand’s showcase for heritage trail development, with 17 trails created since 1991, a higher number than any other region. The trails are aimed at guiding visitors around cultural, historical and other interesting highlights, helping them discover the ‘real’ Hawke’s Bay.

Central city heritage inventory

The Hastings central city Heritage Inventory Project was begun in 2004 with the aim of providing information on the history and heritage of a large number of buildings in central Hastings. The project covers 115 buildings. This has resulted in the preparation of 89 reports (some buildings are grouped together) that contribute to the unique history and architecture of the Hastings.

The Hawke's Bay Fallen Soldier's Memorial

The Hastings Cenotaph, is a solemn monument in Civic Square that honours the soldiers of Hawke’s Bay who served and died during World War One. This tribute, unveiled on Armistice Day in 1923, stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for our freedom.

Freedom of the District

The civic honour of Freedom of the District is bestowed upon military units with historic ties to Hastings. Learn about the ceremonies and traditions that have cemented the relationship between our community and the New Zealand Defence Force, symbolizing mutual trust and respect.

The 9th Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles Guidon

The Regimental Guidon, entrusted to the Hastings District Council for safekeeping is a revered symbol, bearing the battle honors of the 9th Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles. It reflects our city's deep connection to its military history and the bravery of those who served.

The Mayor's insignia of office

Discover the history behind the ceremonial regalia worn by Hastings' mayors, from the prestigious Mayoral Chain of Office to the Civic Ceremonial Robes. These symbols of authority, rooted in medieval traditions, represent the continuity of leadership and the responsibilities entrusted to our city's elected officials.

1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake

Every year on February 3, Hastings commemorates the anniversary of the 1931 Hawke's Bay Earthquake. A special ceremony open to the general public is held at the Hastings City Centre Mall to remember the day that changed lives in Hastings and wider Hawke's Bay, and to celebrate the city and community around us.

Council history

As was common across New Zealand, many small towns had their own town boards or councils in the early decades after European settlement. As the introduction of motorised vehicles reduced the travel time between areas and a desire to see communities work together evolved, it became more practical and less expensive to amalgamate towns in close proximity. Hastings followed that pattern.

150 years of Hastings

On 8 July 1873, Francis Hicks auctioned 100 acres of his land, divided into town and suburban sections. This signified the start of Hastings CBD.
