Central city heritage inventory

The Hastings central city Heritage Inventory Project was begun in 2004 with the aim of providing information on the history and heritage of a large number of buildings in central Hastings.

The project covers 115 buildings. This has resulted in the preparation of 89 reports (some buildings are grouped together) that contribute to the unique history and architecture of the Hastings.

The project was initiated jointly by Hastings District Council and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust (NZHPT); financially supported by Council, the NZHPT, the Hastings City Business Association (formerly Hastings City Marketing) and the Landmarks Trust.

The project covers the 27 buildings in the CBD that are registered by the NZHPT and/or are protected under the Hastings District Plan (Group 1).

The remainder are buildings that have local historical or architectural significance (Group 2) or that have local townscape significance (Group 3).

While Group 2 and Group 3 buildings are not ‘listed’ or ‘registered’, many still fall within the Central Character Precinct which is an overlay affording streetscape protection to a specific area in the central city.

The aim of the project was to provide information on the history and heritage values of central city buildings ' . . . in order to assist in the assessment of Resource Consent and Building Consent applications, assist property owners in preparing consent applications, provide up to date information as part of Land Information Memorandums and . . . [and] be useful to members of the community in researching the history of a particular building.’ (Project Brief, 2004.)

The inventory is a standalone resource, separate from the District Plan, serving as a useful non-regulatory resource for the preservation and conservation of city's heritage.

The report on each building is available using the links below, or the full two volume inventory is available in hard copy for viewing on request; contact Council.

For more information on this project, please contact a Council Environmental Planner (Policy).
