A grandad raising six grandchildren, a solo mum with two kiddies, a mum and dad with four children who also care for an elderly parent, a man living alone; all of them living in emergency or transitional accommodation, are about to move into their new homes.
Whānau will move into the 18 new social houses in Flaxmere over the next week, after a blessing ceremony on Wednesday [April 27].
“Whānau will bring these homes to life,” said Hastings Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst, after the ceremony. “This is exactly what we hoped for when we had the vision in 2018. We developed the Hastings Place-based Housing Plan with our partners, and then got on with building these safe, healthy homes. It has become a reality and more are on the way: quality homes for our people.”
There were huge smiles and a few tears, as the families who will live in the homes attended the blessing and viewed their new homes. The Korowai St houses, off Flaxmere Ave, are all built to healthy homes six-star standard, and range from one to four bedrooms.
“That variety of sizes means we can help all manner of whānau, from those living alone to big family groups,” said Mayor Hazlehurst. “A huge part of our housing plan has been to provide homes for people living in emergency and transitional housing – to provide them with the stability they need to make a life for themselves and their wider whānau.”
Between the two areas of social housing, affordable privately-owned houses for first home buyers are being built, fulfilling the housing plan’s aim of having mixed developments that will create communities.
Partners to the Hastings Place-based Housing Plan attended the blessing: Hastings District Council, Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga, Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Te Puni Kōkiri, and Kāinga Ora.
Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga chairman Mike Paku told manuhiri that the completion of the first social homes is a “great representation of the housing plan and the true partnerships that are enabling it”.
“I thank Hastings District Council and acknowledge Mayor Sandra Hazlehurst for their vision that has led to us being here today.”
Mayor Hazlehurst told the crowd that the most special part of the day was hearing the stories of the people who will be moving in to the homes. “That is what this is about.”
She thanked all of the organisations and people who had worked so hard to achieve the goals of the Hastings Place-based Housing plan. “Without these relationships and partnerships we would not be standing where we are today.”
