Whakatu Arterial Link Update - 26 September 2018

Whakatu Arterial LinkWork continues to progress well on the Whakatu Arterial Link route in preparation for its projected opening to motorists at the end of December this year.
With the two roundabouts, one at Whakatu Road and the other at the State Highway 2 intersection, complete, attention has turned to the final Pakowhai Road roundabout, work on which is now 70 per cent finished.
Over the coming month, the aim is to have the roundabout sealed by the end of October.
With this done, work can then continue on the Farndon Road safety improvements where the intersection of Farndon and Pakowhai Roads will be altered to remove the option of turning right out of Farndon Road.
Instead, drivers wanting to turn right out of Farndon Road, will need to first turn left, then go around the roundabout before heading north towards Napier.
Pakowhai Regional Park, and the dog park have become increasingly popular over recent times so the carpark area has been doubled in size to meet the extra demand.
Chip sealing of the new roadway between the Pakowhai roundabout and the new bridge installed over Karamu Stream will occur shortly and KiwiRail will soon start changing the tracks at the level railway crossing.
This includes new sleepers, tracks, signals and half-arm barriers.
In addition, the road between the State Highway 2 and Whakatu Road roundabouts, is being built up with gravel layers in preparation for sealing.
Planting work, with more than 13,000 plants planned to be installed along the route, has been completed at both the State Highway 2 and Whakatu Road roundabouts.
Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has also undertaken extensive planting at the new Hawea Park, off Rangitane Road, with more to come.
