Applications are open for the Annie Aranui Scholarship, funding from which aims to enable and support young mana wāhine into the public sector.

The scholarship, which is administered by the Hawke’s Bay Youth Futures Trust, opened in 2021 in memory of Annie Aranui who was the Hawke’s Bay and Tairawhiti regional commissioner of the Ministry of Social Development, and served more than 36 years in the public sector.

Scholarships are currently available to support mana wāhine, aged between 17 and 24, who are working in the public sector, iwi-owned organisations or community-focused Non Government Organisations.

This includes support for rangatahi who are already working to progress their development and career, and offers up to $5000 to support their endeavours.

Hastings local Chanay Peri was the first person to receive a scholarship in 2022.

When she applied she was working for the Ministry of Social Development as an employment case manager, and was then seconded to Te Puni Kōkiri, the Government’s principal agency supporting Māori wellbeing and development.

At the time she said the scholarship provided an opportunity to continue with her passion for Māori development.

The scholarship is administered by the Hawke’s Bay Youth Futures Trust, which is made up of Hastings District Council, Napier City Council, MSD, EIT, Te Whatu Ora and independent representatives from Tumu, Furnware and The Development Hub.

Applications for the upcoming scholarship round are currently open and close on July 31, 2024.
