Hastings’ youth potential highlighted with awards and more

Youth Potential Awards 2024 med

More than 30 young people and youth groups were acknowledged by Hastings District Council this week at a ceremony for recipients of this year’s Youth Potential Awards recipients, as well as those who received Annie Aranui scholarships and youth grants in 2024.

Organised by the Hastings Youth Council the Hastings District Council chambers were packed with supporters to acknowledge these young people who have shown leadership skills, expertise in their sports and cultural endeavours, and the ability to overcome obstacles to achieve their goals.

Fifteen individuals and four groups received Youth Potential Awards in recognition of their commitment and hard work despite the challenges and adversity they face on a day-to-day basis.

Ngā Tohu Aumangea - The Youth Potential Awards have been run by Hastings District Council over the past 18 years, and are a way to shine a light on young people aged between 11 and 24 years who are doing well but might not otherwise get acknowledged.

The candidates were nominated by local service providers, youth groups, marae and schools, put forward for their commitment, resilience, talents and service to others.

“Our young people are the future of our district. It was a real pleasure to meet the recipients and present this year’s Youth Potential Awards to our young people who have been put forward from their community for recognition,” said mayor Sandra Hazlehurst.

“These individuals and groups were nominated for their resilience and quiet achievements in anything from sports to academic and cultural pursuits, whilst overcoming personal challenges along the way and also giving back to the community.

“It was also wonderful to meet the youth grant and Annie Aranui scholarship recipients – all these young people are very worthy of recognition.”

Eight youth groups/individuals received grants for their pursuits, which ranged from competing in world championships in anything from volleyball to canoe polo, to an upcycling business creating sustainable jewellery.

Earlier this year three young women received Annie Aranui scholarships from the Hawke’s Bay Youth Futures Trust to assist them with furthering their studies and career development.

Youth council chair Chris Proctor said one of the best things about being on Youth Council was being able to meet some incredible young people.

“This year’s Youth Potential Awards with a full chamber of inspiring rangatahi was one of those moments.

“I am so inspired and humbled by the courage, perseverance and drive that shape the lives of young people in this community. Today was about recognising just some of those efforts.”
