Critical wastewater project to enter second stage

The first stage of the project along SH2 is now complete

Increased infrastructure capacity to support growth in Hastings is one step closer, with the first stages of the district’s critical new wastewater project now successfully completed.

Funded 50 per cent by central government, this marks a significant milestone in future-proofing the district's infrastructure.

The first stage involved the installation of a one-kilometre pipeline alongside State Highway 2, from the roundabout at Ōmāhu Road to Lyndhurst Road, and a 470-metre pipeline along Bennett Road in Waipatu.

The project, which will be completed in stages over the next two years, provides essential infrastructure for increasing housing capacity in Flaxmere, supporting ongoing development in Hastings, and relieving pressure on parts of the city’s wastewater network that are currently at capacity.

The council is actively engaging with relevant parties as details of the remaining stages are finalised.

With a total budget of $36.3 million, this vital wastewater upgrade is being supported by $18.5 million from the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, allocated by central government in 2022.

The second stage of the project, known as the Wairatahi project, is currently out for tender. This will cover the section from Ōmāhu Road to Flaxmere, south along the expressway and further extend the recently completed pipeline. A pumpstation is also proposed in this section of work.

Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst highlighted the importance of this project for the district’s future.

"Ensuring our critical infrastructure keeps pace with growth is a top priority for us. Infrastructure is the backbone of our community’s development, and this project—part of our Long-Term Plan—ensures that Hastings has the capacity to meet both current and future housing needs.”

When fully completed, the entire project will deliver 10 kilometres of new pipelines and two new pump stations, forming a key part of the council’s broader plan to future-proof Hastings and provide sustainable wastewater infrastructure to support housing intensification.
