The former Frimley Pools site is set for a new chapter, with Hastings District Council calling for community-based sport and recreation groups to express interest in putting the area to new use.
The 6725m² site, on the north-west corner of Frimley Park, has been closed since early 2024 following sustained decline in use, rising operational costs, and the need for major investment in its aging infrastructure. Council is inviting proposals from organisations that can help use the space for active community use in a way that aligns with its status as a public recreation reserve.
“The site has long been part of the local landscape and while the pools themselves have reached the end of their life, the land still has potential to support our community’s wellbeing,” said Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst.
“The park’s status means it can only be used for sport or recreation and cannot be sold. We’re encouraging eligible organisations to come forward with ideas that reflect both the needs of the community and the purpose of the reserve.”
The existing infrastructure on the site includes a 50m pool, changing rooms, and grandstand, which may be retained, adapted or removed depending on the proposal. All proposals must:
The Registrations of Interest (ROI) process is the first step, helping Council assess what types of uses might be possible. If suitable proposals are received, Council may proceed to a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) phase later this year.
The deadline for registrations is 3pm, Tuesday 2 July 2025, via the Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS).
To view the documents and lodge an ROI, people need to register as a 'Supplier' with GETS via the website www.gets.govt.nz/RegisterUser.htm
Once registered, to view the full ROI documentation they should enter 31802932 in the search field.
Council acknowledges there is strong public interest in the site’s future and will ensure the community remains informed throughout the process. To receive updates email (with Frimley in the subject line): parks@hdc.govt.nz.
