ANZAC

April 25 is the day of remembrance for the fallen of all wars, but specifically it commemorates the day Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) landed at Gallipoli in 1915.

Rolls of Honour

We continue to remember the fallen.

You can search names of people from Hawke’s Bay who fought in World War I as well as the names of WWI returned servicemen who settled in Hastings and are now lying at rest in RSA Service cemeteries:

Poppy Places

Have you ever thought about the many streets, memorials and monuments in our district and wondered who they are named for and why are they there? In Hastings many streets are named for people who served in conflicts overseas. For example Russell Street is named after Napier-born, Sir Andrew Russell, who commanded New Zealand soldiers in World War I in England, Gallipoli, France and Belgium.

The national Poppy Places project is about ensuring we never forget.

By using the Poppy (an internationally known symbol) to mark these places, those who pass by will be reminded of their sacrifice.

The New Zealand Poppy Places Trust develops, promotes, and oversees the nation-wide project, encouraging all New Zealanders in local communities to:

  • Identify places which have a link to our military involvement in a conflict or operational service overseas
  • Research and record the history of these places on the poppyplaces.org.nz website
  • Link the physical with the recorded history, by joining the community in an organised remembrance ceremony to educate and to forever mark the place/monument with a poppy
