One of the most successful musicals in history, Godspell is a contemporary version of parts of the Gospel according to St. Matthew, retold in music, mime, and comedy. It has been performed almost constantly around the world since the 1970s! Godspell is based on Biblical parables, and the last seven days of Christ’s life. These stories and events are portrayed in a way which is sometimes funny, sometimes sentimental. Well-known songs in the show include Prepare Ye, Save the People, and Day by Day. The show is derived from the book of the same name written by American John Michael Tebelak, with music and song lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. Our production is by arrangement with ORiGiN Theatrical Pty of Sydney, Australia.
We have engaged 10 amazing actors and a band of 7 stunning musicians to present the show to you in the amazing setting of the lofty Waiapu Cathedral in Napier. Our cast includes names well-known in the Hawke's Bay theatre world, like Carol Williams, John Graham, Karen Green, Kerry Tattersall. Lisa Eagle, Laura Jeffares, Rachel Griffiths and Ross Corbett. Two new names are Aaron Percival and Roger Parr, bringing their talent to the stage in Napier for the first time. All of these people are great singers as well as fantastic actors - essential qualities for this high energy show. Our band, which is on stage throughout the show, will be led by well-know local drummer extra-ordinaire David Hanlon. Find out more about the cast and the show on our Facebook page.
