The Hastings City Centre Revitalisation Plan was adopted by Council in February 2019 following extensive consultation with stakeholders and the community. The purpose of the plan is to assist with the improvement of the performance of the City Centre through urban design initiatives to create a distinctive and vibrant city centre.
The transformation of the Cornwall Park plaground will begin in July 2019 and is expected to be completed by mid-December. Play features for all ages and abilities are proposed as well as the provision of new amenities including toilets, shelter, furniture and drinking fountain.
In March 2016 after receiving more than 3000 responses from the public, a Hastings District Council record for this type of consultation, 80 percent asked that the Hawke’s Bay Opera House be strengthened and reopened. In August 2017, this strengthening work began and is expected to take 20 to 24 months.
The aim of the Façade Enhancement Scheme is to provide financial support to building owners and tenants to upgrade their façades, using colour schemes that are both aesthetically pleasing and sensitive to the colour schemes of adjacent buildings, the scheme will remove unsightly features and replace conflicting signs with more sympathetic versions.
In 2010, Hastings District Council (HDC) submitted a proposal to the New Zealand Transport Agency to become New Zealand’s first “Model Community” – an initiative designed to demonstrate that carefully planned, sustained investment in walking and cycling can have a positive impact on a community.
The Whakatu Arterial Link provides a very important connection between the growing fields of Hastings, the production facilities of our district and the routes out of the region to our customers across New Zealand and the world. It moves large vehicles from the residential streets in and around the Whakatu residential area, making the streets safer for our people.
