Cornwall Park Playground Upgrade

The transformation of the Cornwall Park playground began in July 2019 and was completed by mid-December. New play features for all ages and abilities have been installed, as well as new amenities including toilets, shelter, outdoor furniture and a drinking fountain.

LTP ReservesCornwall Park is a high profile park, a popular area for passive recreation, play, events and cricket.

It serves the local community and the wider district by providing extensive facilities for recreation including a children’s playground, bird aviary, botanic display house, formal gardens, the Osmanthus Gardens, and the district’s premier cricket ground.

The park, the oldest in Hastings, has an English village green atmosphere, with hundreds of mature trees, some of which date back to the 1920s when the park was first established.

Planned upgrade to the playground

The 2019 transformation of the playground in what is one of the district’s three premier parks, alongside Havelock North Village Green and Flaxmere Park, reflects Hastings District Council’s commitment to investing in our public spaces for the enjoyment of residents and visitors.
The management of the park, including projects such as the playground upgrade, are governed by its Reserve Management Plan.

The adopted design of the new playground respects the surrounding environment; highlighting the theme of water and oak trees, without impacting or encroaching on any historic features.
Play features for all ages and abilities are included in the design, as well as new amenities including toilets, shelter, outdoor furniture and a drinking fountain.

Works are within the existing footprint of the playground, and involve the removal and replacement of all the existing equipment (with the exception of the Splash Pad). The Liberty Swing is being moved to Frimley Park. The central feature within the playground is an acorn tower with connecting rope structures and slides. The 10m height of the structure allows climbers to be up in the trees looking down on the playground below. Other features include a flying fox, junior play area, raised mounds, swings, monkey bars, slides and spinners.

Work on the playground started on Monday 1 July 2019 and completed by mid-December, ready for summer fun.
