FAQ's - Background Information

What is the reason for this work?

This project will see a new water main pipe laid between Hastings and Havelock North to build resilience and flexibility into the district’s drinking water supply. Once it is fully operational it will mean all water for Havelock North is sourced from the Hastings bores, allowing the last of the Brookvale bores to be closed.

When did the project start and how long will it take?

The contractor March Construction took over the site on 28 February.  The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

I have a business on that route, how will it be affected?

A key account manager has made every effort to be in touch with all businesses along the route to discuss particular issues or concerns and to provide a communications channel. If you have not been contacted and wish to discuss the project, please email the Account Manager.

Why have they chosen this route?

The route has been selected as it is the most direct route between the two areas that is away from the existing pipe (in Havelock Rd). The separation between the two pipelines increases resilience.

What will the works entail?

The 500mm diameter water pipe is being laid over 4.8km, through Hastings streets, from Sylvan Rd to Napier Rd via Crosses Rd. There is also related waste water works in some areas.

Will there be any traffic interruptions or diversions?

Council is working with contractors to ensure residents and businesses are aware of the project and to keep traffic interruptions to a minimum.

Will the work impact access to schools, businesses and people using the iWay network?

Council has been in close contact with the school that is on the route, has a key account officer liaising with businesses, and is keeping cycling groups updated through a cycle-focused emailing list. Each group has different needs which are being addressed through these processes.

Will residents have any restrictions to access their homes?

There may be short periods of time when access to driveways is limited. Individual property owners/tenants will be advised in advance.

Will there be a lot of noise?

There will be some noise because of vehicle movements, trenching work and operation of equipment. The impact of noise on the community will vary according to the time of day, nature of work and proximity to the noise source.
