New Hastings kerbside waste collection service about to start

New kerbside waste collection services start in Hastings from Wednesday this week, aimed at encouraging better management of rubbish and recycling.

The new services arose from the Hastings and Napier Joint Waste Management and Minimisation Plan consultation, which drew more than 6000 submissions from residents.

Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said it was exciting to have this service up and running this week.

“Council is looking forward to working with the community to manage their waste, reducing what is going to landfill and ensuring a more sustainable future for our district.”

Currently, more than 98,000 tonnes of waste is sent to the landfill each year. About a quarter of this comes from kerbside collections, and a solid waste survey in 2019 showed that more than 60 per cent of kerbside rubbish bin content could instead be composted or recycled.

To help encourage better waste management council has introduced new recycling crates, and general rubbish wheelie bins that will replace the single-use plastic official (orange) council rubbish bags.

The kerbside rubbish collection service has been contracted to JJ’s Waste & Recycling Ltd, and Smart Environmental Ltd has been awarded the recycling contract.

For recycling, households have received three 45-litre black crates. Residents can use any crate, with items separated into glass, paper and cardboard, and plastics and cans.

Households on kerbside collection routes have received a 120 litre wheelie bin for their general rubbish.

With new facilities now available, all grades of 1 and 2 plastic can be recycled – that means the likes of meat trays and fruit punnets as well as plastic bottles - but people need to make sure they check the number before putting items out for collection (it must be a 1 or 2).

To make kerbside rubbish and recycling accessible for everyone in the Hastings district urban area, council is offering a service to assist those residents who are not physically able to get their rubbish wheelie bin and recycling crates out for collection.
