International art exhibition calls for submissions

Councillor Kev

Artists are being invited to submit works to an international art exhibition with the theme 2020

The Hands Across the Pacific Art Exhibition has been run by the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC) since 2001. Traditionally the physical artworks have been toured however, this year, in response to COVID-19, there will be a strong on-line component.

Hastings District councillor Kevin Watkins says the competition is an opportunity for Hastings exceptionally talented artists to have their work shown across the Pacific and China, and further afield. “I am so very proud of our artists and know they will stand out with the judges who will select the works to be shown.”

He says Hastings’ strong links with China go back more than 40 years to its first Sister City relationship with the Chinese city of Guilin. “And, of course, we are in the middle of our China Hastings Year of Tourism competition which will see Hastings students win trips to China after it resumes once we are out of this COVID era.”

A spokesperson for CPAFFC said the theme, 2020:Link, had been chosen “as we find ourselves in a world where one is unprecedentedly linked to another. In this period of time, it is our sincere wish that the 20th HAP Art Exhibition will be a bridge of art and beauty, bringing you the soothing and inspiring love and hope.”

There is no restriction on the style of art, which can range from oil and acrylic, to videos and photos of installations. Submissions need to be submitted by June 30. For full details on submission requirements contact Kevin Watkins: councillor.watkins@hdc.govt.nz
