More housing for Flaxmere

Providing more affordable housing in Flaxmere is a key focus for Hastings District Council and it was exciting last month to unveil a new development in Tarbet Street.

Here, there will be 17 new houses built and two lots have been put aside for 18 social/transitional houses.

Turning the sod on July 18, Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst said Council was focused on providing homes for our people and working hard on providing long-term housing solutions for the community – especially those families living in motels or struggling to find emergency accommodation.

“We are working with the likes of Kainga Ora to provide transitional/emergency housing, to provide affordable housing, and to free up appropriate land to build other conventional housing.

“Getting the Tarbet St subdivision underway is a major milestone and we will remain focused on progressing other developments in the coming months.”

Council has continued to work with a variety of agencies, including Kainga Ora, Te Puni Kokiri and Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga to progress housing consents in Flaxmere and other areas where sites are being investigated for a mix of social/transitional housing, affordable homes, and conventional homes.

Another exciting project that got underway this year was Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga 120-home Waingakau housing project in Flaxmere, an initiative that is a collaborative partnership with council.

The visionary plan is to provide warm, healthy, quality affordable homes, using a co-housing model that supports the inter-generational community by enabling social interaction.

Te Taiwhenua’s overarching vision is to ensure people have access to choice and opportunity, live in healthy and safe environments, feel a strong sense of identity, connection and community, are proud of and enriched by their culture, and are in control of their lives.
