Ebbett collection of Whakairo Māori

Ebbett

Mr G. Ebbett is pictured here, next to the pole at the park's entrance.

Now located in the Hastings District Council building on Lyndon Rd, this collection of 26 carvings or whakairo Māori was gifted to the city by a former Mayor of Hastings, Mr George Ebbett in 1924.

The earliest is thought to have been carved in the late 1860s and they appear to be from three houses – carved by three different groups of carvers of the Arawa and Mataatua tribes between 1865 and 1878.

The carvings used to be on display at Ebbett Park from 1927 to 1974 after which it was decided they were of such importance they should be housed indoors. They underwent some restoration work at Pōrangahau Marae in 1983 before being put on display at the council building.

Here is another picture of the entrance gateway to Ebbett Park, which was created from carvings from different Māori whare. The gateway, led to Ebbett House. The house was a Māori meeting house or wharenui that was reputed to have been obtained by an officer of the Imperial Army from its original site possibly in the Upper Waikato area. After his death it was stored in Auckland from where it was bought by George Ebbett in 1917, and re-sited at Ebbett Park in Hastings.
