Free and easy: Petanque at Frimley

The district’s first public petanque court has been opened; a move that has especially pleased resident Barbara Lucas who convinced Council of the merits of the idea.

The petanque terrain was opened next to the Frimley playground, in Frimley Park, last month, with Mrs Lucas throwing down the first boule.

The building of the petanque court was a joint venture with local contractor Russell Roads which helped with construction and the donation of materials.

The project had the backing of Petanque New Zealand which provided Hastings District Council with a list of all the good reasons for encouraging the sport. The organisation’s president Stefany Frost said the sport was a “healthy outdoor activity”.

It did not need to be “taught”, a quick overview of the rules and a player could be on the court having a go; it is a “low tech, inexpensive and easily accessible” sport; it encourages social interaction and sometimes “intense competition”; anyone from five to 95-plus of any physical ability can play (it is commonly played from a wheelchair); it can be social or competitive.

Having the petanque court next to the playground was a “win/win”, said Council’s parks manager Colin Hosford. “Having a mix of family-friendly activities for all age groups in one area of the park encourages more people to use our facilities. That’s what we love to see.”

By summer a sign will be up next to the petanque area, explaining how to play. “So grab your boules and head to Frimley for a go.”
