New councillors all signed up

The councillors were sworn in at Hastings District Council today, marking their first official occasion since the election on October 8.

Each of the new and returning councillors took their oath and signed their declaration of office in front of a gathering of family, friends and Council staff.

While it was all about the councillors there were moments when little ones definitely stole the show. New councillor Bayden Barber and returning councillor Jacoby Poulain both have toddlers who were determined to help their parents through the oath-taking ceremony.

For returning councillor Henare O’Keefe it was his mokopuna who helped him mark his oath-taking, with the tikia tonu haka, led by Elijah, 12.

The councillors went on to hold their first meeting, which consisted mainly of procedural matters. Sandra Hazlehurst was voted in as deputy mayor. The meeting was adjourned and will be reopened on November 8.

The next full meeting of the Hastings District Council will be held on November 17.

The Hastings Rural Community Board members were also sworn in today and held their first meeting of the triennium.
