One last shove for Green total

One final push is needed to raise the last of the funds needed for the Havelock North Village Green’s “once-in-a-generation” upgrade with just over $19,000 to go.

Hastings District Council budgeted $1.7 million toward the project at the time of the public consultation on the revamp.

As part of that conversation, residents put forward a popular plan to move the historic Havelock North Cricket Pavilion to a central spot within the Village Green. The cost of that move was $300,000 and Council stretched its budget out another $150,000 but asked the community to fundraise the other $150,000. The challenge was taken up by the Havelock North Business Association and community champion Andy Coltart.

As at last week $131,000 had been raised through major contributors and almost $6000 from a Give a Little page.  Major funders include LowMac Properties Ltd, the Mackersey Family Trust, First Light Community Trust, Eastern and Central Community Trust and Run Walk Hawke’s Bay.

There is now just over $19,000 to find.

There have been some “outstandingly generous contributions and we are very proud of the support we are receiving from the community”, said Hastings deputy mayor Sandra Hazlehurst.

“This is a very exciting, once-in-a-generation project that will benefit all of our community.

“Once of my favourite parts is the paved area on the park side of the pavilion which is where we plan to have chess and table tennis tables – they are places where generations can mix together and enjoy each other’s company,” Mrs Hazlehurst said.

Because the bulk of the money had been raised, Council had gone ahead with the move of the pavilion. Council staff are hoping to be in a position to take bookings for the facility in the new year, once the last of the funds have been raised and the refurbishment of the inside of the building is finished.
