Water load threatening supplies to homes

Water restrictions may have to rise to level three in Hastings, Flaxmere, Bridge Pa and Havelock North unless there is a big reduction in water use.

Three very hot days have seen water consumption rise dramatically which has meant the reservoirs have not been able to fill fast enough to keep up with demand and levels are dropping.

This means some residents are at risk of water pressure reducing to a trickle unless people adhere to the current level two restrictions. Those restrictions mean that gardens can only be watered every second day between 6am and 8am, and 7pm and 9pm.

“If everyone complies with the current level two restrictions we believe we can avoid raising the level,” says Hastings District Council assets manager Craig Thew yesterday.

“As we’ve said, this is not a water shortage, it is an inability of the pump system to keep up with demand. If we don’t drop demand (specifically the use of sprinklers on lawns and gardens), then some people at the ends of the water system could lose water supply.

“Some properties have lost pressure to a point where their flow is reduced to a trickle. We really need everyone to band together to help,” Mr Thew said.

“The real problem is outdoor use – watering gardens and lawns. We are asking that people living in odd numbered homes water on odd dates; even number homes water on even dates, within the two-hour periods specified. The savings that come from that should mean that everyone can have water coming out of their taps in their homes.”

Council staff are continuing to work on bringing Brookvale Bore No3 back on-line which will certainly help ease the situation but, as in every summer, people will be asked to keep being particularly careful with water until the end of the hot season, Mr Thew said.
