Another weekend of Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market 20th birthday celebrations took place last weekend, this time cutting the ribbon on the market's brand new giant rooster.

Commissioned by the Farmers’ Market the sculpture was created by Hawke’s Bay artist, Ricks Terstappen, and welcomed by market patron Sir Graeme Avery.

Sculpted from repurposed steel, the rooster stands a proud three metres high and boasts a bright red comb and polished toenails!

It was sponsored by The Mills Family Trust, which has played a significant role in funding public art sculpture in the Bay.  Marketing committee member Sophie Siers said the Trust was exceptionally generous in their donation and had created a legacy for the market that would be seen and appreciated by generations to come.

"The market has supported many local food businesses get up and running and kept our region supplied with fresh local food for 20 years.  To mark this birthday with a legacy sculpture of such quality is a wonderful way to celebrate this milestone."

The sculpture will be placed at the entrance to the market, in front of a newly painted mural to welcome customers.  The mural, painted by Jonelle Jarvis of Bay Espresso, shows stallholders and customers going about their weekly shopping ritual.

Siers said that the rooster, the mural and the recently launched Farmers Market Book were an acknowledgement and celebration of the role that the market had played in making the region famous for the quality of its food and food producers.
