Council provides a general rubbish collection service, paid for through rates and the purchase of official orange rubbish bags, and a recycling service, paid for through rates. Some commonly asked questions about the service are answered on this page.
We are putting systems in place to ensure our essential services continue during the COVID-19 Level 4 isolation period, and beyond.
Waste management and collection is important for our community, and council is asking for your help to manage this in the weeks ahead.

There is no change to Council's rubbish and recycling collections on public holidays.
If your rubbish or recycling has not been collected and does not have a rejection sticker, or the reason for the rejection is not clear, please contact the appropriate contractor.
Your household rubbish must be in an official Hastings District Council orange bag (sold at these outlets); be at the kerb by 7.30am on your collection day, each bag must not weigh more than 10 kilos, and not include any of the following items:
Your clean recycling must be sorted into suitable bins. Recycling needs to be at the kerb by 7.30am on your collection day and be sorted into the following categories:
Please do make sure the recycling is clean: bottles, jars, plastics and tins emptied and rinsed. Dirty recycling risks whole batches of product not being able to be recycled and ending up in the landfill.
If it is windy please tie cardboard and paper into a bundle, and sit it on top of your plastic recycling – no-one likes to see recycling blowing down the streets.
Our contractors will leave rubbish containing banned items and unsorted and dirty recycling at the kerb, marked with a rejection sticker.
For much more on recycling see our dedicated recycling page.
