When there is no other option there is the landfill. Council’s kerbside rubbish collection sends everything in the orange bags to landfill. The challenge? Keep as much out of the orange bags (or privately contracted wheelie bin) as possible.
Council provides a kerbside rubbish collection, with everything in the bags going to the landfill.
The service is paid for partly through rates (a charge to every home that is on a rubbish collection route) and partly through the purchase of the official orange bags, available from a number of outlets in Hastings.
There are things you are not allowed to put in the orange bags (green waste and hot ashes) and things you shouldn’t put in there, particularly hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, medical needles etc) and items that can be easily recycled (bottles, cans and paper).
If you need to dispose of sharp objects (broken glass etc) please wrap it carefully – think about the person who is grabbing your bag to throw it onto the rubbish truck. The weight limit, to protect the collectors, is 10 kilos.
We do ask that before you put something in the general rubbish collection that you ask yourself: ‘Can this be re-used, upcycled or recycled to keep it out of the landfill?’.

The kerbside collection is carried out on the same day every week including on public holidays. Check which day yours is picked up by entering your address on the Collection Days page (If you have a contract with a private rubbish collector you need to check the day it goes out and whether it will be picked up on public holidays with that company.)
