Hastings is absolutely beautiful

Hastings was crowned the Supreme winner of this year’s Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards, something the community as a whole can be proud of.

It also secured the Most Beautiful Large Town title, and both accolades reflect the efforts a lot of people make to beautify where we live.

From the volunteers who turn out regularly to plant in our parks and reserves and the people who give up their spare time to pick up litter in our streets and parks, to those who get involved in the planning of public spaces, and our Council teams who work hard to make and keep all of our places beautiful, everyone plays a part.

In the beautiful stakes Hastings has a head start given our amazing natural features and outstanding climate, but the awards are about much more than that.

They are particularly focused on sustainability, environmental care, and community input, and when the judges visited Hastings in September they were impressed by the efforts put into keeping our parks beautiful and sustainable, our waste, recycling and anti-litter programmes, our care for our heritage buildings, and our passionate community that gets involved in so many ways.

They were shown our amazing parks and playgrounds and showcased the work our more than 100 volunteers do planting trees and shrubs in our reserves (it is estimated they have put in more than 4000 hours over the last 12 months).
