Auckland Theatre Company, together with Toitoi – Hawke’s Bay Arts & Events Centre, is bringing its latest production, Two Ladies, to Hastings at the end of March. Toitoi kaiwhakahaere/manager Megan Peacock-Coyle went to the opening night last month…

With a star-studded cast, including Jennifer Ward-Lealand, Anna Jullienne and Rena Owen, Two Ladies was always going to be a powerhouse theatre show. Its premise is two first ladies, American and French, stuck in a room together while their husbands meet off-stage.

It’s a fascinating, and at times amusing insight into the lives of two women, loosely based on Brigitte Macron (‘Helene’, played by Ward-Lealand) and Melania Trump (‘Sophie’, played by Jullienne), who we usually only ever see from a distance, or via the media.

Two Ladies is full of powerful and entertaining dialogue alongside unexpected twists and turns. Jullienne shines as the cold, distant Eastern European wife of the American president, and is both familiar and surprising. Ward-Lealand gives a performance befitting one of our most iconic veterans of New Zealand theatre.

Interspersed with bursts from captivating support characters, including Owen as the American press secretary, Two Ladies makes you realise the power that these women have in their roles as wives of the most powerful men in the world. It takes pillow talk to a whole new level!

With outstanding performances from exceptional actors and moments of humour and intensity, filled with painful truths, this is a show that keeps you engaged throughout. Add to that a cliff-hanger ending, Two Ladies had me thinking about it for days afterward. Don’t miss your chance to see these absolute stars of New Zealand theatre in Hastings while you can.

When: March 28, at 2pm and 7.30pm.

Tickets: Start at $36.50 for a concession, available at the Toitoi Box Office, by phoning 0800 842 538 or at www.toitoivenues.co.nz
