Soft plastics recycling has arrived in Hawke’s Bay

Soft Plastic Recycling NZ are now providing drop off locations for soft plastics in Hawke’s Bay. The collection bins are at The Warehouse, Countdown and Havelock North New World. 

What’s accepted?

-          Basically anything made of soft plastic which can be scrunched into a ball, including bread bags, frozen food bags, toilet paper packaging, confectionery and biscuit wrap, chip bags, pasta and rice bags, courier envelopes, sanitary hygiene packaging, squeeze pouches, dry pet food bags, lightly foiled coffee and tea bags, etc.

What’s not accepted?

-          Compostable bags

-          Heavy foiled bags

-          Anything contaminated with food and liquid

PLEASE NOTE: This is not a Council service and soft plastics are not accepted in the kerbside recycling crates or the rural drop off stations.

Funding money for great ideas

Hastings District Council’s annual Large Contestable Waste Minimisation Funding round will open on August 19.

“We want to encourage our community to come up with projects that help reduce waste going to landfill, and people with great ideas to apply for this funding,” said waste minimisation officer Cloe Vining.

There’s up to $20,000 up for grabs, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re an individual, school, community group, or business.

Projects that have been funded in other parts of the country include community compost set ups, bins for waste diversion at events, machinery for community clothing repairs, zero waste construction trials, educational projects, and upcycling projects.

Reduce your Waste – Reduce your Costs

To reward those households that generate less waste, Council has applied a Rates Remission (a partial reduction in rates) to part of the refuse component of the 2021/22 rates assessment.

Council individually tags the wheelie rubbish bins and collect data on how often they are emptied. If your council wheelie bin was emptied 26 times or less over the past year you will qualify for a $32.25 (incl. GST) remission.

This amount reflects the savings made from reduced disposal costs of rubbish not sent to landfill.

Over 8,000 households have had this remission applied. If you are one of them, you will see the amount in the “remissions to date” line of your rates notice. (If you are getting other remissions, the amount in the field will be more than just the refuse remission amount).
