Roading recovery snapshot

Puketapu Bridge

Despite significant rain in recent months, roading recovery across the district has continued steadily. Monitoring of bridges and the wider roading network is ongoing around rain events.

Council would like to remind drivers to please comply with all load and speed restrictions on bridges and report dangerous driving to Police. Issues requiring maintenance outside these worksites can be reported to Council by phone (06) 871 5000 or via the Hastings District Council website. Doing so will ensure this work is allocated to available contractors as a matter of priority.

Puketapu Bridge

Fulton Hogan has completed building a causeway extending into the riverbed. This used 4000m³ of clean river aggregate to create a river diversion standing 1.5m above the existing riverbed.
The causeway ensures a safe and efficient work area while minimising disruption to the river ecosystem. Work has also started on both abutments, with three out of six piles (reaching a depth of 15 metres) already completed. A further six more piles are still required, with some of these reaching a depth of 41 metres.

During the causeway construction, 19 longfin eels, one shortfin eel, and one Cran’s bully were safely relocated to an undisturbed section of the river upstream.

Dartmoor Rd slip

The repair of the slip at Dartmoor Road, being done under emergency works, is progressing well, with river diversion complete and work well underway at the slip site below the road.
This project remains on track for completion by the end of the year, pending any unforeseen events.

Taihape Rd slips

TW Civil & Infrastructure (and partner Toa Civil Construction) have begun repairs to 11 major slips along Taihape Road. These works will include building retaining structures and walls to support soil movement, repairing dropouts along the road, and completing drainage and road surface improvements.

It is estimated the repairs will take 18 months to complete, working between the hours of 7am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Note: On occasion, work may be done on Saturdays as required. Much of the work will be within the single-lane closures already in place.

Kererū Gorge culvert rebuild

Despite some challenging and complex conditions, the first phase of construction of the Kererū Gorge culvert rebuild has gone well, and piling work has now started which will form the foundations for the structure. In late September, work is expected to start on installing the arched culvert.

At this stage, the overall project timeline of Kererū Gorge being open to traffic by Christmas is unchanged.
