Working out in Flaxmere Park

Five more pieces of exercise equipment have gone into Flaxmere Park this week, making walking the circuit under the mature trees even more interesting.

Hastings District councillor Henare O’Keefe tried out the new gear on Thursday, watched by four of his mokopuna.

“It is wonderful. Parks should be about all ages and these exercise stations mean adults as well as children have fun things to use in our suburb’s beautiful green space.

“It’s also about encouraging people to take on a healthy lifestyle and providing equipment so they can do that without having to spend money.

“I’m hoping all of our people come down and have a look, take a walk, stretch on this new equipment – and maybe take on a round of disc golf.”

The nine-hole disc golf course was installed over summer and had proved a popular addition.

The work is all part of the $1.2m 10-year plan for the park. Over the last seven years, $900,000 of that money had been spent in the 17-hectare park, including on the new playground, splash pad, new toilets, fencing, lighting, car parking, picnic furniture and the shared walking and cycling track.

With $300,000 left, Council held a public consultation in April on what to spend the remaining funds on. The overwhelming response was to spend it on more play gear. The equipment was in the process of being selected.

At the same time, residents were asked if they wanted to keep the pond. The pond requires re-shaping and re-lining to provide a barrier between the surface water and the underlying aquifer. Residents were asked if the funds needed to redo the pond should be spent elsewhere in the park. The majority wanted the pond to be kept.
