Incident Management Centre build underway

EMO building

Work has begun on the construction of the Incident Management Centre on Lyndon Road East to house the regional Civil Defence Emergency Management Group.

Simkin Construction Ltd has been appointed to carry out the project on the site next to the Hastings District Council building.

Work began on Wednesday this week with the area fenced off to contain the activity.

Council manager strategic projects and partnerships Raoul Oosterkamp advised members of the public that the footpath along Lyndon Road will remain accessible while the work is happening, but people should be cautious given the area is next to a construction site.

The need to replace the existing building with one that was more fit for purpose had been identified in the last two years, and the Hastings District Council and the regional Civil Defence Emergency Management Group have worked closely together on the design of the new future-proofed Importance Level 4 (IL4) facility.

“When completed it will be flexible, modular, safe and scalable so it can be tailored for specific incidents to ensure effective response to and recovery from emergencies,” Mr Oosterkamp said.

Its IL4 rating means it is able to withstand a one in 2500 year earthquake.

While construction is underway the regional Civil Defence Emergency Management Group will remain across the road in Heretaunga House in the temporary emergency management centre until the new IL4 facility is complete, which is anticipated by the end of July 2019.
