Bin Hire Company (BHC) has taken over operating the Blackbridge refuse transfer station, with some changes planned to make for a better customer experience.
BHC is a locally owned and operated family business and has signed a two-year contract with Hastings District Council to take over from Phoenix Contractors.
It began operating at the site last weekend.
One of the first initiatives is the building of a new weighbridge, which will be used to assess the fees people pay. This should ensure a much fairer user pays system.
The existing pricing, however, will be maintained for the next few weeks.
BHC will continue to operate three days a week with a view to opening on Fridays as well after three to six months of operation.
There are also plans to do a big tidy up, trimming trees, installing new signage, filling potholes, mowing and spraying and cleaning or removing buildings that are too old to use.
As well as a tidy environment, visitors will also be able to peruse the second-hand shop that will be established onsite.
Waste diversion is a big driver of the company’s ethos and it plans to file monthly reports on how much waste could have been diverted from landfill via recycling, repurposing or reusing materials, operations manager Hana Montaperto-Hendry said.
“We thrive on reduce, reuse, recycle. The limit to repurposing is only the imagination. As a business we are proud to be a part of keeping New Zealand clean, green and beautiful.”
