Park's annual bejewelling

Red, yellow and green lights will sparkle through the Osmanthus Gardens in Cornwall Park, Hastings for nine days from February 24.

Hastings District Council’s International Advisory Group chairman Kevin Watkins says the annual lighting of the gardens makes for a “spectacular sight every evening”.

“The lights will be turned on from dusk until 11pm each night, which will give everyone a chance to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the gardens. Ambient music will play in the gardens while the lights are on, which will add to the special feeling that is created by the Osmanthus Gardens,” Kevin Watkins says.

“The gardens are one of Hastings iconic attractions and will be a wonderful place for families to spend a quiet evening. We receive extremely positive feedback from both locals and visitors each time we light the gardens.”

The Osmanthus Garden, in Tomoana Rd, is a traditional Chinese garden established in 1996 to commemorate Hastings' 15th anniversary of the sister city relationship with Guilin.

The garden takes its name from the Osmanthus family of plants, including highly scented shrubs and ground covers, which have been extensively planted throughout, along with group plantings of pine trees and bamboo.

At the heart of the garden is a large pond with pavilions at its edge. It is spanned by the curved Friendship Bridge across one end and by the Crooked Bridge across the other. The garden is a skilful combination of Chinese and New Zealand elements and plants.

The will be lit each evening from February 24 until March 6.  The dates fit in with the Horse of the Year, in Hastings from March 1 to March 6, which attracts thousands of visitors. Mr Watkins says that timing means “our visitors can take time out after a hard day’s eventing or spectating to take a stroll around what is one of Hastings most beautiful gardens”.
