Get on your bike; pathway opening

A picturesque eight kilometre cycle ride will mark the opening of the Havelock North cycleway this weekend.

The latest addition to the Hastings iWay pathway network will be officially opened on Saturday (March 19).

The last time a bike path was opened along Havelock Rd a huge crowd of people turned up, keen to try out the new shared pedestrian path and cycleway.

And this Saturday’s opening of its matching half is expected to attract just as much interest.

The eight kilometre ride will start from St Georges Restaurant, 452 St Georges Rd, after an official opening ceremony by deputy mayor Cynthia Bowers.

The ride will follow the Karamu Stream cycleway, out to Crosses Rd, onto St George’s Road, and back to the restaurant.

A shorter ride will be signposted for ones with youngsters who might not be able to make the eight kilometres.

The ride will be well marshalled to ensure the safety of all riders.

There will be spot prizes up for grabs, coffee and food available to purchase from the restaurant, and a bouncy castle for the children.

Cyclists and families are being invited to start gathering in the restaurant garden from 10.30, with the official opening being held at 11am, and the ride setting off at 11.15am.
